Welcome to our Workshop

Course Location: This course is a virtual event
Course Date: October 25-28, 2022
Course Application Deadline: October 10, 2022

The 2022 SSRL Summer School on Synchrotron X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and Imaging will be hosted remotely between October 25-28, 2022 via online zoom sessions over 4 days. This school will follow a new format that has been developed to reach a large audience and address targeted questions about X-ray data collection, analysis, theoretical correlation and presentation. Lecture materials are posted on the SSRL summer school YouTube channel.

Participants will be asked to review and practice course material posted on-line followed by zoom-based classroom and beamline sessions. The beamline training session will go over real time data acquisition, beamline optimization, issues during sample alignment and measurements, old and new routines in the data collector on BL 7-3 and BL 2-2. We encourage all SSRL hard X-ray spectroscopy users to register and participate in the beamline sessions irrespective of whether they plan to attend the rest of the summer school, since the session will provide a critical refresher of the data acquisition software to new and returning users. The classroom sessions will focus on challenges on the trajectory of proposal to publication. The topics will be driven by both participants and the teachers. Examples of successful proposal writing will be demonstrated with real examples of proposals awarded time at SSRL. The classroom sessions will also focus on best practices in data reporting for publication and methods to successfully evaluate literature data. This will be followed by a participant driven small-group 1-on-1 session for in-depth analysis of specific problems. A parallel session on XAS imaging on BL 2-3 will be organized.

Students and researchers wishing to participate in the Summer School must register to attend through the school web portal and should select either Imaging or EXAFS beamline training session. The participants will be sent zoom registration information for the school via e-mail. The deadline to apply is October 10, 2022.

NEW: Participants who are interested in competing for 1 shift of beamtime through a summer school proposal are encouraged to submit applications significantly ahead of the deadline. (Restrictions apply on the type of samples that can be measured during the school)

The Summer School will be chaired by SMB personnel with extensive support from several SSRL staff. Funding is provided by NIH, DOE-BES, and DOE-BER.

We look forward to your participation and a fruitful Summer School.
