Theme 1:  Software Trends, Trade-offs and Their Impact on Future of Extreme Scale Databases

How do current trends in software and deployment like cloud technologies, microservices, edge computing, serverless computing, etc., affect the design and operations of extreme-scale databases, data analytics, and data management systems?  What are the trade-offs and considerations practitioners must take into account?

Theme 2:  Hardware Trends, Trade-offs and Their Impact on Future of Extreme Scale Databases

How will future trends in hardware like quantum computing, GP-GPU, NVRAM, usage, CPU core counts and bandwidths, etc., affect the design and operations of extreme-scale databases, data analytics, and data management systems? What do current practitioners need to know about changes in the computing landscape?

Theme 3:  Data Science Meets Scalable Services and Data Platforms

How do we make the job of the data scientist easier while working with extreme-scale data? This theme will discuss topics such as providing analytics and modeling as a service via notebooks and data platforms or providing scalable computing and workflow via technologies like Dask and Apache Spark.

Theme 4:  From Exploration to Real-World Extreme Scale Production

How do we take extreme-scale data analytics and modeling from the explorations of data scientists to operational production systems? This theme tackles issues like validation, deployment, model maintenance, state and knowledge maintenance, retraining, failure detection and handling, etc., that occur when building real-world extreme-scale systems.

Theme 5:  IOT at Scale

Real-world systems from logistics to the Internet of Things provide high-volume, high-velocity, extreme-scale data. What are the techniques and considerations specific to this application area for databases and analytics?

Theme 6:  Social Implications of Extreme Scale Analytical Systems

Extremely large databases can have extremely large impacts on society. What are the ethical and other social implications that practitioners need to take into account when proposing, designing, building, and operating extreme-scale databases and analytics systems?
